Since the first prototypes of the camel pack, widely credited to Michael Eidson of CamelBak in 1988, the concept of hydration in a backpack has come a long way.
Pioneering these portable water systems in the late 80′s and early 90′s, it seems unlikely that the company could have imagined that the systems would become so widely used. Originally, it was just a way to complete bike races with out stopping for a water break. Athletes in other sports began to see the benefits and soon adopted the camel packs. Today these hydration packs are used in everything from motor cross to adventure racing.
While hydration packs are widely discussed with regard to sports, the applications have far exceeded the confines of pass-times and friendly competition. Exploration and combat have been added to the uses of hands free hydration. The military and even NASA see the value of these hands-free hydration units.
